St Peter and St Paul’s, Chaldon is internationally renowned for the twelfth-century doom mural on the west wall of the church and the church is mentioned in the Doomsday book.
Church is currently closed. - Visitors are very welcome and the church is open daily from 10am to 3pm during the winter and 10am to 4pm during the summer. The tiny Norman church of St Peter and St Paul stands Chaldon forgotten down a quiet country lane, looking out onto farm fields, on the western fringe of Chaldon, only a mile inside the M25 ring road.
Yet within this small building is one of the finest early medieval treasures in England, Chaldon wall. Chaldon, Surrey I've wanted to visit SS Peter & Paul for the extraordinarily early, and oddly placed (it's on the west end wall), C13th Doom wallpainting since my sister visited in May but timings and events have conspired against me until yesterday.
Chaldon is a rural village in Surrey, high on the North Downs immediately west of is in the Wallington Hundred. Though in countryside itself, Chaldon is centred just a mile and a half to the west of the swelling townscape of Caterham on the Hill, which adjoins the metropolitan conurbation, and just north of the junction of two motorways; the M25 and of MGrid reference: TQ So, much of Chaldon life revolves around the Village Hall, the school and the church.
St Peter & St Paul is the only worship centre in the community. Originally Saxon, it was mentioned in the Domesday Book and is a mecca for tourists specially walkers who find it featured in most walking guides to the area.
